World War II Films – Propaganda and Patriotism

During the first part of the 1940's, Hollywood made ​​a film series world war, which not only seeks to entertain, but also to strengthen the spirit of "patriotism" in the American people. These films are influenced by the entry of the United States during the war and support our military efforts involved in the past.

The war was raging in the UK and throughout Europe, while America was still in its period of isolation. Director Alfred Hitchcock released Foreign Correspondent in 1940 allowing that the American public a detailed war without providing the identity of the enemy.

Charlie Chaplin chose to be more directly. In Great Dictator (1940), directed by Chaplin, who gave us a warm parody of fascism and the Nazi Party. Individuals were easily identified behind evening the names of the characters, and presents as dictatorial, power-hungry, who were the tyrants. The production was brilliantly written and directed by Chaplin and still is considered one of the most classic films of the century.

1941 Japan after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States entered the war. Hollywood now begin to release some of the popular war films ever. Republic Pictures film of the Flying Tigers (1942) presented U.S. fighter pilots China's fight against the Japanese just before the invasion of Pearl Harbor. The film was John Wayne, who throughout his career going to be a more patriotic celebrities of all time.

1942 honored the tragic but brave story of the Battle of Wake Island. Although the events were real strange was inaccurate representation of Hollywood. The film gave the public the impression of the island's defenders fought to the last man, when in reality, opportunities and repeated attacks by an overwhelming Japanese troops have led to the surrender of the island. However, Hollywood had not failed in its storytelling as the film Wake Island completed its first goal in terms of propaganda in war and the feelings of patriotism fed.

In 1943 the classic film Casablanca, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, clearly positioned as the evil of Nazis in the war and represents the conquered peoples of Europe as a glorified, courageous resistance to Nazi Germany.

The success of Casablanca, including the Oscar for best picture, helped to establish both Bogart and Bergman as superstars. In the history of motion pictures, Casablanca will always be considered The world as a conventional war and is considered one of the best films of the twentieth century.

Many other films that were produced met the needs propaganda and patriotism, but the mark of this effort is the seven-part series created by filmmaker Frank Capra called Why We Fight. The basic principle of all movies propaganda to create a patriotic mindset that recognizes the sacrifices were necessary to defeat the enemy.

It was not until after the war victories actual documented and a more realistic perspective of the victims and the cruelties of war would be included.

Films during this period of time has helped to keep the American people and always Patriotic mind the necessary justification to support the defeat of the "axis of evil." As they did with the film during the time of the Depression, War Hollywood again gave the audience a film-length mirror that reflects its society, values, beliefs, and their place in history.
